Temporary Root Touch Ups - Worth It?

April 1, 2015

I'd like to say that I started using root touch up products because my highlights grew out so fast but that wasn't the case.  I, like all 4 of my mother's sisters, starting going grey in my 20's and now, at 35, well let's just say they've invited friends and now I have a freaking silver village. Since I travel for a living, booking regular 3-4 week color retouches isn't always practical so I have tried out several temporary color touch-ups.  Not to mention blowing $100 per month on something as mundane as root color is not my favorite and with some of these temporary products, you can stretch out your salon visits to 8-10 weeks!

Now, not all root touch up products are created equal and although I have found my favorite through much trail and error, I'll break down some of the others so you can choose the one that's right for you.

Rita Hazan is my favorite!  The shade range is vast and the needle-like nozzle makes for precision placement.  The spray somehow sticks only to my hair and not my scalp which I love because that's usually the tell tale giveaway that you're faking your color.  Plus it doesn't come off on my fingers or pillow.

Bumble & Bumble Hair Powder was my first purchase and I did use it for years before I started trying others.  I die for Bumble styling products in general but this one is not awesome.  It tends to spray all over and by all over I mean, everywhere... my shower curtain, mirror, forehead, clothing and beyond.  It transfers easily on my hands and bedding which since I use Dark Brown, that too is not awesome.  The upside is they make it in a travel size so I do carry that with me in case of root emergencies in other cities.

WOW Powder is very very pricey for what you get.  I think it was the hair powder Joan Rivers endorsed if I'm not mistaken.  I picked it up at Ulta recently and the color was great.  The application is a bit tedious because it's like applying an eye shadow with a small stiff brush the entire length of your hairline or scalp.  #aintnobodygottimeforthat But if you are naturally a brunette and color your hair blonde, this product is amazing because of the control you get and the coverage so you can temporarily color your roots, without covering your detailed highlights.

If you use one that I didn't mention and love it, I'd love to hear about it!  Let me know in the comments below.
